What: NYU President Andrew Hamilton and Trustees Chair William Berkley will preside over the University’s 184th Commencement ceremony, with approximately 30,000 graduates and guests expected to attend.
Who: Darren Walker—president of the Ford Foundation (the nation’s fifth-largest philanthropy), who for two decades has worked on social justice issues including education, human rights, urban development, and free expression—will address the graduates and guests on behalf of all the honorary degree recipients.
Other honorary degree recipients include:
- Emanuel Charpentier—scientific member and director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology; visiting professor, Umea University—will receive a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa.
- Billy Crystal—comedian, actor, producer, writer, and director—will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts degree, honoris causa.
- John Lewis—member of the U.S. House of Representatives—will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa.
- Margaret Hilary Marshall—former chief justice of Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court—will receive a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa.
- Darren Charles Walker—president, Ford Foundation—will receive a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa.
