New Research Findings to be Released at “Your Brain on Video Games” Event on Feb. 9
NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development will host “Making Waves: Your Brain on Video Games,” a conversation on the promising yet controversial use of video games as tools for learning and to enhance brain functions. Featuring Jan Plass, an expert in game-based learning, the event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at NYU’s Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life (238 Thompson St., 5th Floor).
As the NYU Steinhardt Paulette Goddard Chair in Digital Media and Learning Sciences and co-director of the Games for Learning Institute, Plass is a leader in improving the ways video games are designed as educational tools. His research in the field aims to provide scientific evidence of what makes learning games both compelling and effective. Plass will present new findings on the effectiveness of brain training games developed at NYU Steinhardt at the Feb. 9 event.
Also featuring Daphne Bavelier, professor of psychology and educational sciences at the University of Geneva, the discussion will address how commercial video games can positively impact brain plasticity, learning, and other cognitive functions.
The event is part of the yearlong Making Waves series, a key component of the Steinhardt School’s 125th anniversary celebration. Additional events and panels throughout the year will feature distinguished NYU Steinhardt faculty and guests discussing how new research on the brain is helping us better understand human behavior.
