New York University College of Nursing (NYUCN) is pleased to present the 2016 Estelle Osborne Legacy Celebration, Wednesday, February 24, 2016, from 3:00PM—5:00PM at the Rosenthal Pavilion, 10th floor, NYU Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South.

The annual event celebrates the legacy of Estelle Massey Osborne (1901-1981), an African-American nurse-leader who was a pioneer in organizational administration. Osborne worked tirelessly to eliminate discrimination in the professional nursing organizations in this country and in society as a whole. The ceremony culminates with honoring one of NYUCN’s distinguished alumni whose professional career embodies the true spirit of Osborne’s legacy.

This year’s honoree is Nellie Carter Bailey, EdD, PHCNS-BC, MA ’80, clinical associate professor and associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

“Osborne's fight to eliminate exclusionary practices in nursing occurred during a time when rigid patterns of segregation and discrimination in nursing education and employment for Blacks existed across this country,” said Eileen Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the College and host of this year’s event. “Working tirelessly for 43 years, Osborne was steadfast in her efforts to ensure that future Black nurses would have the opportunity to gain the experience and education needed to rightfully become the nursing leaders of the future. Nellie Carter Bailey is one of these leaders, and we hereby recognize her commitment to promoting excellence and providing outstanding leadership and support to her nursing program, to her profession, and to her community at large.”

Additional participants for the afternoon’s program include: Jamesetta A. Newland, PhD, FNP-BC, FAANP, DPNAP, clinical assistant professor, who will serve as the program’s master of ceremonies, as well as Bridget McCurtis, PhD, assistant vice provost for diversity and the senior director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program at NYU, who will speak on the topic of diversity and inclusion at NYU and beyond. Penelope Klatell, PhD ’75, MA ’71, president, NYUCN Alumni Association and Mariah Rodgers, BS ’16, president, Black Student Nurses Association, (BSNA) will also deliver remarks.

Jazz music during the event will be provided by Steinhardt’s music program, and light refreshments will be served. To RSVP, please email nursing.rsvp@nyu.edu and indicate the names of guests who will be attending. For more information, the public may call 212-998-5305.

The Estelle Osborne Legacy Celebration is sponsored by the NYU College of Nursing, its Alumni Association, and the NYU BSNA. The mission of the BSNA is to foster the NYU College of Nursing ideals through leadership, academic excellence, service and partnership, while supporting the development of social and cultural awareness among Black nursing students.
