The Graduate Film Program at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts today announced that MFA producing student Josh Foster will be the recipient of the 2016 Robert Oberman, Gregory Pickert and Media Services Producing Award. This annual award is given to a graduate film candidate in the third year of the program who has produced an outstanding body of films over their course of studies.

Foster’s selection was based on his wide-ranging collection of short films and commercials produced since he entered the program in 2013. Having worked in the financial sector for nearly two decades prior to attending Tisch, Foster brought a seasoned and unique perspective to the diverse array of filmmakers with whom he collaborated.

“Josh embraced working with directors who explored stories and cinematic styles ranging from the ethereal to VR. He worked tirelessly to help every director achieve their vision while maximizing every resource at hand,” said Peggy Rajski, Producing Area Head of Studies at Graduate Film.

“In the South, where I’m from, storytelling is a tradition that is looked upon with great distinction,” said Foster. “The idea that I can forge a career collaborating as a creative partner with directors and writers to inspire, motivate and hopefully raise serious discussion through film is beyond my wildest dreams. It’s been a real honor and privilege to be a part of the NYU filmmaking community as a producer and I look forward to continuing the journey in the professional world.”

“This is a well-deserved award for Josh,” said Barbara Shock, Chair of Graduate Film. “With his background in finance, his strong instincts for good material, and his excellent line producing skills, he has a very bright future in the film industry. We want to thank Media Services for this generous grant, which helps more students pursue careers in producing.”

The Robert Oberman, Gregory Pickert, and Media Services Producing Award recipient is chosen annually by faculty in the department. Past producing alumni who have received the award include the following:

Lydia Dean Piltcher - Amelia, The Talented Mr. Ripley
Stanley Wlodkowski - American Beauty, Eat Prey Love
Paul Mezy - Maria Full of Grace, Beasts of the Southern Wild
Matthew Myers - Then She Found Me, Henry Fool
Mollye Asher—Fort Tilden, 2014 SXSW Best Feature
