Glenn Kotche, composer and drummer for the world-renowned Wilco, will be a guest performer with the NYU Percussion Ensemble this fall as part of NYU Steinhardt’s Program in Percussion Studies fall performance series, which will also feature the NYU Marimba Ensemble, NYU Steel, and a series of Masterclasses directed by Percussion Studies Director, Jonathan Haas.

All performances are free and open to the public. Masterclasses and NYU Steel will take place in the Percussion Penthouse and remaining performances will be held in the Fredrick Loewe Theatre, both located at 35 West 4th Street. Friday, December 4 at 8 pm: The NYU Marimba Ensemble performs, led by director, conductor, and acclaimed percussionist Simon Boyar. Boyar and his ensemble constantly strive to breakdown boundaries between classical and popular music, collaborating with composers from around the world. Works on the program will include: Andreasson’s Tinplay, Boyar’s Rain, Rankin’s Cerebral Cortex, and Chapman’s Second Thoughts.
Monday, December 7 at 8 pm: The NYU Percussion Ensemble performs with special guest Glenn Kotche. Kotche is both a solo artist and drummer for the world-renowned Wilco. He has composed for a variety of ensembles, such as: Kronos Quartet, the Silk Road Ensemble, Bang on a Can All-Stars, So Percussion, and Eighth Blackbird. This program will feature several of his works, including: Hush, Drumkit Quartets #1, 3, and 54, Clapping Music Variations, and The Haunted Hive.
Percussion Masterclass Series directed by Jonathan Haas takes place in the Percussion Penthouse Tuesdays at 7 pm. This semester’s guest will feature:

Sunday, December 13 at 6 pm, closing out the fall series will be NYU Steel, directed by all-around percussionist, expert steel drum performer, and composer Josh Quillen. The program will include a variety of works from Philip Glass’ Piano Etudes arranged for steel band to the traditional music of Trinidad and Tobago.
Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, established in 1925, instructs over 1,600 students majoring in music and performing arts programs. Music and Performing Arts Professions serves as NYU’s “school” of music and is a major research and practice center in music technology, music business, music composition, film scoring, songwriting, music performance practices, performing arts therapies, and the performing arts-in-education (music, dance, and drama).
