Film Fatales founder and Tisch alumna Leah Meyerhoff will present a screening of her magical first feature length film, I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS, on Friday, October 30, as the first event of the year for NYU's Fusion Film Festival.
The 2016 Festival, which will be held March 3 through 5, is NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ premiere student film festival dedicated exclusively to showcasing the work of emerging female filmmakers throughout NYU, along with bringing iconic women from all areas of film, television and new media to engage in inspiring conversations, masterclasses and screenings with the festival audience. Last year's festival highlights included appearances by Academy Award nominated cinematographer and director Reed Morano (Frozen River, Kill Your Darlings, HBO's Looking), showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and Janet Tamaro (Rizzoli and Isles), Mary Harron (American Psycho) and a centerpiece event with HBO's Sr.VP of Programming Doris Casap.
Meyerhoff graduated from Tisch with an MFA in 2014 with I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS as her thesis film. Her earlier short film TWITCH (2004) which was the basis for the feature, won the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance and was a finalist for the Student Academy Award will also be screened at the event. I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS premiered in competition at the 2014 South by Southwest Film Festival, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Atlanta Film Festival, Best Score at the Nashville Film Festival, Honorable Mention at the Woodstock Film Festival and additional awards from IFP, San Francisco Film Society, Tribeca Film Institute and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation.
At the Fusion FF screening, Meyerhoff will be joined in a Q&A by her lead actress Natalia Dyer (currently at Gallatin) as well as fellow Tisch alums cinematographer Shlomo Godder, and music supervisor Colby Trane, along with editor Michael Taylor. The onversation will also illuminate Meyerhoff 's experiences transitioning from a student to a working filmmaker, as well as her advocacy for women behind the camera as founder of the industry-based group Film Fatales. The conversation will be moderated by Tisch Grad Film Professor Jenn Ruff (also a member of Film Fatales.)
The screening and discussion are free and open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. in Tisch Theatre 006 at 721 Broadway, in Manhattan.
About Fusion Film Festival
The Fusion Film Festival is NYU Tisch’s premiere festival dedicated to celebrating the work of women in film, television and new media, from student to icon. In the 13 years since its launch, the student-run festival has been proud to attract accomplished artists such as Julie Taymor, Linda Obst, Miranda July, Lena Dunham, Penny Marshall, Amy Heckerling, Barbara Kopple, Lauren Zalaznick, and Jane Campion. Beyond the multi-day annual showcase of work, Fusion also serves as a vital artistic community that explores ways to break down barriers that separate men and women in film and television, while creating valuable opportunities for collaboration, cross-promotion and mentorship.
