The Information Law Institute at NYU School of Law and the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU Steinhardt, in partnership with the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology at UC Berkeley School of Law, will host the Conference on Responsible Use of Open Data: Government and the Private Sector on Nov. 19 and 20, 2015.
Amen Ra Mashariki, the City of New York’s Chief Analytics Officer and leader of the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics, will open the conference on Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. at NYU Law’s Vanderbilt Hall, Room 214 (40 Washington Square South). Additional speakers from NYU, UC Berkeley, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, UNC, UPenn, and Google are confirmed. For a detailed agenda of events, please visit the conference’s website.
The conference will look at normative challenges associated with open data, including privacy and other civil liberties, equitable access to data, and what counts as public interest. Working toward an idea of “responsible open data,” academics will present findings from Microsoft-funded research projects focusing on these challenges. The conference will look beyond government to the obligations of private/commercial data collectors and holders to make their holdings available for individual, public, and research purposes. To this end, the conference will convene three key groups:
- Those who collect and hold data in the private/commercial sector (e.g., health insurance companies, telecommunications providers, and financial organizations)
- Those who need data to serve the public good
- Those who provide technical platforms for data sharing as well as those who develop governance mechanisms to enable and encourage sharing
Reporters interested in attending must RSVP to Rachel Harrison, NYU Office of Public Affairs, at 212-998-6797 or rachel.harrison@nyu.edu. Other attendees must register through the event’s website. The event is supported by the Microsoft Corporation.
