The Austrian author and current writer-in-residence at Deutsches Haus at NYU will read from his recent novels Brennerova (2014, Hoffmann und Campe Verlag) and Brenner and God (2012, Melville House), and discuss the works.

On Tuesday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m., Deutsches Haus at NYU presents a reading by Wolf Haas, the Austrian author and current writer-in-residence at Deutsches Haus at NYU, from his recent novel Brennerova (2014, Hoffmann und Campe Verlag) and Brenner and God (2012, Melville House). The reading will be followed by an in-depth conversation between Wolf Haas and the German writer and translator Kevin Vennemann about the genre of crime fiction, the cult figure of Simon Brenner who is the focus of eight of Wolf Haas’ novels, and the birth of the unmistakable voice in which this series is written.

Wolf Haas, born in Maria Alm in Austria, worked as a university lecturer and copywriter for an advertising agency before delving into the world of crime fiction. His series of novels featuring the detective Simon Brenner has reached international acclaim and sold in the millions. He has been awarded the German Crime Novel Award (Deutscher Krimi Preis) several times, and has also received the Literature Prize of Bremen in 2013 for the novel Verteidigung der Missionarstellung. His books Komm, süßer Tod (Come Sweet Death), Silentium!, Der Knochenmann (The Boneman), and Das ewige Leben were adapted into successful feature films.

Kevin Vennemann is a German writer and translator living in New York. His debut novel, Nahe Jedenew (Suhrkamp Verlag, 2005), has been translated into 12 languages (published in English by Melville House in 2008, translated by Ross Benjamin). Other publications include the novel Mara Kogoj (2007, Suhrkamp Verlag) as well as the critically acclaimed book-length essay, Sunset Boulevard. Vom Filmen, Bauen und Sterben in Los Angeles (2012, Suhrkamp Verlag).
