Lynn Videka, Dean of NYU’s Silver School of Social Work, Named as Board Chair of New York Council of Nonprofits

The members of the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) have elected Lynn Videka, dean of the NYU Silver School of Social Work, as board chair. With its nearly 3,000 members, NYCON provides a collective policy voice for the nonprofit sector, helps inform philanthropic giving, and conducts research to demonstrate relevance and impact. Videka will be its first board chair from New York City.

“Lynn’s long time dedication to and unique perspective on nonprofits is invaluable,” said Doug Sauer, CEO of the council. “She’s been immersed in our community both while living and working in the Capital Region and, certainly now, as a leader in the nonprofit and academic communities in the New York City area. We couldn’t be more pleased to have her wisdom and experience guiding us through this exciting time for NYCON and our members.”

NYCON works together with its members, other nonprofit organizations, communities, funders, and stakeholders to build the capacity of nonprofits and communities to enhance the quality of life through responsive, cost-effective service and by forming a long-term, multi-layered service relationship with our member nonprofits. It also works in close partnership with government and the private sector (community foundations, private foundations, and United Ways) to educate and directly assist their nonprofit constituencies.

NYCON’s mission is to develop and support a vibrant and effective nonprofit community in New York State,” said Videka. “NYCON provides the highest quality infrastructure support services to New York’s nonprofit community. I look forward to working with NYCON’s board and staff to advance the very important work of nonprofit organizations throughout the great state of New York.”

Since Videka joined New York University’s Silver School in 2009, she and her colleagues have created a global MSW focus and established a strong research program, including founding the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, the Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health, and the NYU-ECNU Institute for Social Development at NYU Shanghai. Videka came to NYU from the State University of New York (SUNY) - Albany, where she served as Distinguished Service Professor, dean of the School of Social Welfare, and vice president for research. She has served on the NYCON board of directors since 1990, including holding positions of past chair, vice president, and secretary.
