NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) announces the launch of the LTC GIAP. The LTC (Long Term Care) GIAP (Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile) is for use in assessing staff knowledge, perceptions of care practices, professional issues, as well as the care environment for nurses, certified nursing assistants and other staff specific to the LTC and SNF setting.

Skilled nursing facilities that use the LTC GIAP will be able to assess baseline data, trending over time, and comparison to peer sites. The development of the new assessment tool involved extensive research and consultation with long term care facilities and subject matter experts.

The original GIAP was created in the 1990’s to quantify staff knowledge, attitudes and perceptions in the care of older adult patients at NICHE designated acute care sites. This highly successful tool with a database of over 110,000 completed surveys is the basis for the long term care version.

The survey is easy to administer and provides invaluable data for targeting areas for improvement. Upon completion, LTC GIAP data is analyzed and reports are provided to the LTC facility that identify:

• Comparison of staff against other LTCs by peer bed size and teaching status

• Baseline for use in judging effectiveness of CQI (Continuing Quality Improvement) efforts

• Objective evidence of gaps in knowledge levels

“Until now, the GIAP only supported benchmarking by our hospitals,” says NICHE Executive Director Barbara Bricoli, MPA. “The new LTC GIAP is an important step in our efforts to expand NICHE across the continuum of the healthcare system. A cohort of 30 nursing homes that are part of an initiative with the New Jersey Action Coalition tested the LTC GIAP to help assure its viability as a benchmarking tool.”
