Yep, NYU is home to the world’s largest timpani drum, which was built by Steinhardt’s Jonathan Haas, virtuoso timpanist and director of the percussion studies program. Here are the specs:

Size: 70 inches (nearly six feet!) wide and nearly four feet tall, almost TWICE the size of the world’s second-largest timpani.

Debuted: In Louisville, Kentucky, at the Percussive Arts Society’s November 2003 convention.

Made out of: A 150-year-old solid copper bowl that Professor Haas discovered in a cow pasture in Aspen, Colorado. The kettle had originally been used to manufacture Swiss cheese at the turn of the century.

Lowest note: A B-flat TWO OCTAVES below the lowest C on any other existing timpani.
