New York University College of Nursing (NYUCN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara Bricoli, MPA, as executive director of Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE). NICHE, established in 1992 with funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, is the leading nurse driven program designed to help hospitals and healthcare organizations improve the care of older adults.
“Putting quality health care of older adults in the forefront of health care improvement has been the mission of the NICHE program for 22 years,” said Eileen Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN, NYUCN Dean and Erline Perkins McGriff Professor. “Now more than ever, the results of the NICHE approach are bringing nurse driven solutions to health systems. Ms. Bricoli is the right leader for the right time to move NICHE forward, building on NYU College of Nursing’s deep capacity in geriatric research, education, and practice.”
In her new role, Bricoli will be responsible for continuing to build successful programs to engage hospitals, healthcare leaders, consumers, faculty, and other stakeholders in the expansion and sustainability of the NICHE program. In addition to managing NICHE’s successful membership model, she will seek to engage new relationships with funders and corporate entities, expanding NICHE’s offerings and increasing its resource development. A critical aspect of her job will be developing and maintaining relationships with faculty, scholars, and other university partners to assist NICHE in achieving its goal of providing the premier healthcare model in the care of older adults.
“I couldn't ask for a more exciting time to lead NICHE,” says Bricoli. “I believe that the profound shifts occurring in healthcare due to the rapid growth of the aging population, the critical mandates coming out of the Affordable Care Act, and the population health needs across the globe will drive change and revolutionize healthcare. The NICHE community will be the leaders in transforming the healthcare system for years to come and it is an honor to help ensure there is a sustainable platform to support their efforts.”
Bricoli joined NICHE in 2007, and most recently, served as managing director, collaborating closely with former NICHE Director Elizabeth Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN. The team was responsible for building a sustainable model of care that has been adopted by over 530 hospitals and healthcare organizations in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda — and soon Singapore and Mexico. Bricoli supervised the development and execution of the business strategy, technology innovation, and operations of this social venture, leveraging evidence based content and peer collaboration to create a program that has helped transform healthcare for the elderly.
Bricoli will continue to work with Sullivan-Marx, NYUCN faculty, and The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing based at NYUCN to ensure the continued success and integrity of NICHE.
Prior to joining NICHE, Bricoli served in leadership positions with many nonprofit organizations, spearheading the growth, transition, and startup of organizations including the former Service Employees International Union 1199NJ, a labor union representing over 7,000 nursing home and home care workers and a community development corporation dealing with access to healthcare, income security, and housing.
