The Department of the Music and Performing Arts Professions at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development will stage six performances of the iconic American musical Carousel, February 6-10 at the Frederick Loewe Theater.
The second collaboration between Rogers and Hammerstein after their initial success with Oklahoma!, Carousel tells the story of the tragic romance between carousel barker Billy Bigelow and millworker Julie Jordan. Based on the play Liliom, by Ferenc Molnar, Carousel features some of the most beloved songs in musical theater history, including “If I Loved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
The production will be directed by William Wesbrooks, with musical direction by Michael Ricciardone, choreography by MK Lawson, scenic design by Josh Smith, projections design by Bart Cortright, lighting design by Driscoll Otto, costume design by Karen Hummel Kinsley, and sound design by Craig Kaufman. The production stage manager is Kathryn L. McKee. The cast of 32 and orchestra of 40 will feature undergraduate and graduate students of NYU Steinhardt School’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.
Performances will take place Thursday, February 6 through Saturday, February 8 at 8 p.m., and on Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9 at 3 p.m. A special industry night performance will be held Monday, February 10 at 8 p.m., for which attendees presenting a union card (AEA, SDC, USA, Local 802) will be admitted free. Tickets are $20, $5 for students or seniors.
