With participation in the LTP healthcare organizations commit to higher quality care for older adults

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) announces the opening of registration for its February 2015 Leadership Training Program (LTP).

The six-week, web-based program provides an interdisciplinary hospital team with the tools and resources to begin the process of increasing the quality of care for older adult patients at their facility and achieving NICHE designation. Registration information for the LTP starting Feb. 9 is available at: www.nicheprogram.org/LTP

“Worldwide the number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to two billion by 2050,” according to NICHE Executive Director Barbara Bricoli. “The LTP is the first step in preparing hospitals for the burgeoning older adult population. The NICHE program is the only nurse driven geriatric program available. It is designed to assist facilities in raising the level of geriatric care through the use of an interdisciplinary team.”

Since the inception in 2009 of the online version of the LTP program, 388 hospitals and 1569 individuals have participated. NICHE has more than 580 hospitals and healthcare facilities in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda and Singapore.

LTP participants:

• Develop excellence in the care of older adults

• Engage in the online, 30 credit hour course

• Collaborate with experienced NICHE faculty

Three people responsible for steering the NICHE initiative at the facility should attend the LTP session. This typically includes a nurse clinician leader, a clinical educator and an administrator or quality manager. NICHE designated hospitals can also use this opportunity to train additional staff for their NICHE team.

The Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile, an extensive web-based assessment of the hospital’s readiness to implement geriatric programs, is included as part of the annual NICHE program fee. Participating hospitals also receive registration discounts for the annual NICHE conference.

Upon designation as a NICHE facility, hospitals pay an annual designation fee that includes access to a vast array of resources, ongoing evaluation tools, professional mentoring and access to the NICHE community.
