New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute will host Joseph Lelyveld, former executive editor of the New York Times, for a discussion on South African photographer Ernest Cole on Tues., Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m. at 20 Cooper Square, 7th Floor (between 5th and 6th Streets).
Lelyveld will be in conversation with Fred Ritchin, professor of photography and imaging and co-director of the Photography and Human Rights Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Lelyveld became a friend of Cole’s while reporting from South Africa for the New York Times. In 1966, the apartheid regime expelled Lelyveld, who went on to report from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, London, and Washington for the paper. His book, Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White, based on his reporting from Johannesburg in the 1960s and 1980s, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1986.

The event is co-organized by Global Joint and Program Studies of the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and the Grey Art Gallery. The Grey Art Gallery will feature the work of Cole (1940-1990) in a three-month exhibition, “Ernest Cole: Photographer” (Sept. 3 through Dec. 6), at its 100 Washington Square East location.
