The NYU School of Professional Studies has named Arthur R. Miller, LL.B.—one of the nation’s most distinguished legal scholars in the areas of civil procedure, copyright and unfair competition, and privacy, and a renowned commentator on the law and society—as the new associate dean and director of the School’s Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business.

Professor Miller is a University Professor at New York University, where he currently teaches at the NYU School of Law, serves as director of Public Dialogues for the NYU School of Professional Studies, and is chairman and founder of NYU Sports and Society.

In his new role, Professor Miller will oversee the development of several courses of study that will be added to the Tisch Institute’s existing sports management graduate, undergraduate, and noncredit programs to ensure that its offerings represent the vast breadth of sports-related careers that now exist, and that cater to the needs of professionals in a competitive career environment.

Under his leadership, the Institute also will expand upon the foundational work of NYU Sports and Society, which is dedicated to examining the meaning, morality, and global impact of sports in an intensive and interdisciplinary fashion, and will reinforce its role as the leading academic think tank on sports as a societal force.

“We are delighted that such a distinguished scholar and teacher will lend his vision to leading and to redefining the Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business,” said Dennis
Di Lorenzo, Harvey J. Stedman dean of the NYU School of Professional Studies. “In addition to his in-depth knowledge of the law and business, Professor Miller is passionate about sports. It is this combination that makes him uniquely qualified to continue the success we have already achieved through the sports business program, while focusing on new and emerging opportunities.”

Professor Miller said, “I look forward to continuing my association with the NYU School of Professional Studies in a more focused role, and to engaging with its students and faculty members to create programs and academic content that will be unrivalled in the education and the opportunities they provide.”

Prior to joining NYU, Professor Miller was the Bruce Bromley Professor of Law at Harvard University, where he taught for 36 years. He is nationally known for his work in the field of civil procedure, and is coauthor with the late Charles Alan Wright of “Federal Practice and Procedure,” the legendary treatise in the field. Professor Miller is the author of more than 40 books and numerous articles, including The Assault on Privacy: Computers, Data Banks, and Dossiers, the first book warning of the threat to privacy posed by modern information technology. He has argued cases in all of the U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal and several in the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, Professor Miller has served as commissioner on the United States Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works, as the reporter for and a member of the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States, as the reporter for the American Law Institute’s Project on Complex Litigation, as a member of the Special Advisory Group to the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court on Federal Civil Litigation, and as a member of the American Bar Association Special Committee on Complex and Multidistrict Litigation, among other assignments.

A renowned commentator on law and society, he won an Emmy Award for his work on “The Constitution: That Delicate Balance,” one of the several acclaimed PBS series which he has moderated. Miller also served for two decades as the legal editor for ABC's Good Morning America and has hosted several weekly issue shows on national television. He is the recipient of many awards and honors, including eight honorary doctorates, the Hutchinson Medal for Distinguished Public Service from the University of Rochester, three American Bar Association Gavel Awards, and a Special Recognition Gavel Award for promoting public understanding of the law, among others. In 2011, he was honored by the Queen of England for his charitable and media work by being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

As chairman and founder of NYU Sports and Society, Professor Miller has played a leading role in developing an academic entity that is dedicated solely to the discussion and the exploration of sports and it effects on society. He has moderated numerous public, Socratic dialogues that have featured panels of top sports business executives and athletes including Fred Wilpon, Joe Torre, Bob Costas, Stephen M. Ross, Harry Carson, Teresa Weatherspoon, Victor Cruz, Michael Strahan, Mark Messier, and others. Media representatives regularly call upon Professor Miller to offer expert opinions on pressing social issues in sports. Under his guidance, NYU Sports and Society produced a widely publicized white paper on changing the culture of youth sports and addressing the issue of bullying in the locker room and on the playing field.

Professor Miller earned an A.B. from the University of Rochester, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa, in 1955. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude, in 1958.
