A current MFA student in the Tisch School of the Arts as well as two NYU alumni are recipients of the 2013 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.
The award supports the educations of 30 new Americans—permanent residents or naturalized citizens, as well as children of naturalized citizens—each year, by providing a cash grant for tuition and living expenses of up to $90,000 for two years of graduate or professional study.
The NYU recipients are Tisch student Lilian Mehrel, who will use the award to complete her MFA in film; Wilfredo Matias (CAS '10), who will use his award to pursue an MD; and Dennis Tseng (TSOA '04), who will use his award to support work toward an MBA.
The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans was established in 1997 as a way for the Soros family to "give back" to the country that afforded their family so much opportunity. Fellows are selected with criteria that emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment.
Including this year's three recipients, NYU students and alumni have won five Soros Fellowships since 2010.
