" 'Fotogramas' and Film Culture in 1940s and 1950s Spain" will showcase covers of the magazine from 1946 to 1962, together with displays relating to censorship, cinema theaters, and handbills from the 1940s and 1950s in Spain.
New York University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (53 Washington Square South, New York, N.Y.) will host an exhibit from February 12 to May 3 celebrating the film magazine Fotogramas. Founded in 1946, Fotogramas is the only Spanish film magazine of the era to survive today. The exhibit – Fotogramas and Film Culture in 1940s and 1950s Spain – will showcase covers of Fotogramas from 1946 to 1962, together with displays relating to censorship, cinema theaters, and handbills from the 1940s and 1950s. The exhibit will stage its inauguration event Tuesday, February 12, 7:00 p.m., with remarks by Jo Labanyi (NYU) and Vicente Sánchez-Biosca (NYU-University of Valencia-University of Paris III). A reception will follow.
In addition, a round table discussion on film magazines and film culture in Spain (1920s – 1960s) will be held Wednesday, March 27, 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the exhibit. The speakers will explore the history of film magazines in Spain over half a century, focusing on their role in constructing cultural imaginaries. Toni Ulled Nadal, the current editor of Fotogramas and grandson of the magazine’s founder, will be on hand.
