The Humanities Initiative at New York University and the New York Council for the Humanities have established the Graduate Student Public Humanities Fellowship for 2014-15.
Public Humanities Fellowship in Partnership with New York Council for the Humanities
The Fellowship was developed to bring humanities scholarship into the public realm, encourage emerging humanities scholars to conceive of their work in relation to the public sphere, develop scholars’ skills for doing public work, and strengthen the public humanities community in New York State.
The year-long Fellowship will involve a combination of training in the methods and approaches of public scholarship and work by the Fellow to explore the public dimensions of their own scholarship in partnership with a community organization serving public audiences.
The application deadline is Friday, February 21, 2014 at noon EST.
The skills and experiences afforded by the Fellowship are intended to serve both those scholars who have a record of working with the public, as well as those who are at a more experimental and exploratory stage of understanding the public humanities. It is equally valuable for scholars who plan to pursue tenure-track careers within the academy and those who may plan to pursue alternative career paths, the sponsors added.

REQUIREMENTS:
The Fellow is required to attend a two-day orientation training run by the New York Council for the Humanities on Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19, 2014. During the Fellowship year, the Fellow will research methods in the public humanities and develop a plan to give a public dimension to some aspect of their scholarly interests. As part of this process, Fellows will identify potential community partners for this work. The Fellow will be asked to present about the outcomes of their research and public work to the university community in coordination with The Humanities Initiative and to submit a final report to the New York Council for the Humanities. The Fellow in residence at NYU will be expected to participate in Tuesday lunch presentations with other graduate students and faculty fellows.
During the course of the Fellowship, the Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in programs, workshops, conferences, and advocacy events sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities. The Fellow is also eligible for additional project funds from the Council to support public programs developed during the course of their Fellowship. Throughout the Fellowship, Fellows are encouraged to work collaboratively with the Council to identify community partners, to explore possible methods and program formats, and to share findings as their research progresses.
NYU Fellows will be part of a cohort of Fellows from these six other New York State universities: the City University of New York Graduate Center, Columbia University, Cornell University, SUNY at Buffalo, SUNY at Stony Brook, and Syracuse University.
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be residents of New York State and an enrolled graduate student in a humanities discipline at one of these seven universities: The City University of New York Graduate Center, Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, SUNY at Buffalo, SUNY at Stony Brook, or Syracuse University. Preference will be given to applicants who are in the final stages of the dissertation project.
Applicants need not have performed publicly engaged scholarship before but will have the opportunity to explain previous experience in the application materials.
DURATION & STIPEND:
Duration of the Fellowship is August 2014 to May 2015, including mandatory attendance at a two-day training on August 18-19, 2014 in New York City. The Fellowship stipend is $5000 plus travel funds to attend the August training and other Fellowship-related events that may occur over the course of the Fellowship. The Fellowship is supported in part by Dan & Joanna Rose and an Officers Grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
