New York University will participate in the 43rd annual Earth Day festivities with a week-long celebration of eco-friendly events including a sprout growing workshop, a food festival, film & lectures, green projects, and an environmentally friendly clothing swap. NYUnplugged--24/7
NYU’s residence hall energy reduction challenge, NYUnplugged, is taking place in conjunction with NYU’s celebration of “Earth Week 2013.” This spring’s NYUnplugged competition will focus on educating the NYU community about “vampire power,” also known as stand-by power or “phantom load." This refers to the electricity that is used by home electronics and appliances when they seem “off” or in standby mode.

Earthmatters! Club at NYU in partnership with Teens Turning Green will be hosting a Conscious Information Station in the Kimmel Lobby to provide helpful information about the transition from conventional to conscious living as well as free organic food and samples!

Teens Turning Green is launching the Conscious College Road Tour at 15 campuses nationwide with the goal of informing students about conscious living, smart consumption, and the collective impact of individual actions. Stop by Shorin for dinner, an Eco-Speaker, and to discuss implementing a guide for incoming students which specifies the right products to bring to school for a sustainable lifestyle.
Wednesday, April 17th:
New York Times Drilling Down Series with Ian Urbina 7:30 PM, Kimmel Center, 4th Floor, Eisner and Lubin Auditorium
Oxfam America at NYU presents award-winning investigative correspondent for The New York Times, Ian Urbina. Mr. Urbina is credited with making the issue of hydraulic fracturing accessible through his New York Times Drilling Down Series, the groundbreaking, data-driven series on fracking. On April 17th, Mr. Urbina will discuss how he used investigative journalism as a means to address controversial topics such as fracking. RSVP required.

Come join the Environmental Studies Club for their screening of Food, Inc., in which filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.
Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

As enthusiasm for building sustainable local food systems continues to grow, the discussion is shifting from a focus on entrepreneurship and enlightened consumerism to the need for civic engagement. A growing number of municipalities have become actively engaged in food systems planning--and New York is at the forefront of this movement.
NRDC’s Mark Izeman and NYC’s Food Policy Coordinator Kim Kessler will be joining some of the other city’s leading figures in food policy and planning to discuss the role of local governance in building sustainable food systems. Come see an engaging elevator installation at the NYU SCPS building, 7 East 12th Street (Between University Place and 5th Avenue) that will raise awareness about ocean pollution among the NYU population and the effects of plastic water bottles in our oceans. Earth Day Sustainability Fair. 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM, Vanderbilt Courtyard
Come join the Environmental Law Society, The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, and Food Law in a celebration of sustainable food this coming Earth Day! We will be basking in the glorious outdoors in the Vanderbilt Courtyard, while munching on free vegan, sustainable food. The event will feature several local farmers and artisans giving out free samples, and will be fully catered by a local green business. As if free food wasn’t enough, the Earth Day Fair will also feature games, contests, prizes, and plenty of opportunities to learn what NYU Law is doing to make our campus a greener, more sustainable place.

The food justice movement vies for a food system that is environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially just. This panel discussion will bring together some of the most innovative advocates and practitioners from New York City’s food justice community, such as Brooklyn Grange President Ben Flanner and EcoStation: NY’S Director of Farms & Education, Maggie Cheney.
As pioneers in this movement, the speakers will discuss their own work and the challenges that remain towards promoting a strong local food system, just access to healthy food, self-reliant communities, and a healthy environment in New York City. Organized by the Gallatin Greening Committee.

Friday, April 26th
Pony Power Farm Visit, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Join CHEFs for Schools on our 5th Annual Farm Trip during Earth Week, for a day of planting, weeding, building, mentoring and learning! This year we will be visiting Pony Power Farm in Mahwah, NJ, whose garden is operated by Farm to Live, a program of the Mahwah Environmental Volunteer Organization Inc (MEVO). NYU student volunteers will be paired with environmental studies students from Stuyvesant High School for this day of service.
Pony Power Farm supports our eco-friendly goals and strives to teach children and adults about sustainable, local, and fresh foods. The event is equally enriching for NYU student volunteers, many of whom have never visited a farm before joining our annual farm trips.
The trip is free but we are going to require a $5 deposit that will be returned on the day of the trip. Participants will also have to submit a travel and photo release with CSALS in Kimmel (room 704). Details on how to do this will be explained via the confirmation and an email. RSVP here.
