Protocols tested in over 300 hospitals participating in Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders (NICHE)
The fourth edition of “Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice” (2012) was recently published. The updated edition is edited by nationally known leaders in geriatric nursing education and practice who are endorsed by NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing. This fourth edition has been thoroughly updated to provide the most current, evidence-based protocols for care of common clinical conditions and issues in older adult patients. It was written to help improve the quality, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of health care.
This edition contains new chapters on function-focused care, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, mistreatment detection, acute care models, and transitional care. The content includes contributions from 58 leading practitioners of geriatric care and is written for nursing students, nurse leaders, and practitioners at all levels.
Protocols for each clinical condition were developed by experts in that specific area, and most have been systematically tested by over 300 participating NICHE hospitals. Evidence is derived from all levels of care, including community, primary, and long-term care. Protocols are organized in a consistent format for ease of use, and each includes an overview, evidence-based assessment and intervention strategies, and an illustrative case study.
The editors of the new edition are: Marie Boltz, PhD, RN; Elizabeth Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN; Terry T. Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN; and DeAnne Zwicker, DrNP, APRN, BC with support from Ardis O'Meara. For more information on the the new edition, please see Springer Publishing.
