NYUCN’s 15th Annual Hartford Institute Summer Scholars Program Attracts Top Researchers in Geriatric Nursing

Summer Intensive Focuses on Gaining Valuable Insights into Key Areas of Effective Research Practice

Sixteen post-doctoral researchers gathered at the New York University College of Nursing’s (NYUCN) Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) this week to participate in the 15th annual HIGN Summer Geriatric Nursing Research Scholars program.

The Summer Scholar program (July 30 – August 3) attracts the best and brightest new researchers in the field of geriatric nursing. As HIGN Summer Scholars, participants are given a unique opportunity to work with nationally recognized gerontologic nursing researchers who serve as participant mentors and work with the Summer Scholars on competencies including: helping them foster successful programs of gerontologic research; refining a program of significant research; and honing specific research skills to gain a competitive edge for funding.

Among this summer’s distinguished speakers are such notable geriatric nurse leaders as: Mathy Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN (associate director, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing); Meredeth Rowe, PhD, RN (Leiws & Leona Hughes Endowed Chair in Nursing Science, University of South Florida); and Elaine J. Amella, PhD, RN, FAAN (professor, Medical University of South Carolina).

Throughout their week at NYUCN’s HIGN, scholars gain valuable insights into key areas of effective research practice – from writing a strong proposal, to data collection and measurement, and how to work successfully as a member of an interprofessional research team. Break-out sessions, scholar presentations, small group discussions, and daily assignments add to the Summer Scholar experience and reinforce each day’s theme.

"We are thrilled to be hosting our 15th annual Summer Scholars Program for new nurse researchers in the field of geriatrics,” said HIGN Executive Director, Tara Cortes, PhD, RN, FAAN. “Our sixteen scholars come from all over the United States and have a broad range of research interests focused on enhancing the quality of life for older adults."

Participation in the program is highly selective, and scholars are chosen through a competitive application process. To qualify, a scholar must hold an accredited doctoral degree and be affiliated with a sponsoring university or healthcare institution to be considered. Over its fifteen year history, the program has garnered an excellent reputation for its high-quality content and the outstanding faculty and guest speakers who serve as scholar mentors, making it a highly-sought after career development opportunity for new researchers in geriatrics.
