The New York University Creative Writing Program’s Fall 2011 Reading Series continues in October with events featuring poetry readings and debut writers. All events are held in the program’s Greenwich Village home, the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted. Subways: F, L, M (14th Street/6th Avenue); 1 (Christopher Street); A, B, C, D, E, F, M (West 4th Street). All events are free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Poetry Reading: Chris Martin and Gerald Stern

National Book Award winner Gerald Stern’s “Early Collected Poems: 1965-1992” was published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2010. Chris Martin’s latest book is Becoming Weather (Coffee House Press, 2011). Introduced by poet and NYU faculty member Matthew Rohrer.

Debut Fiction Reading: Teju Cole, Anna Solomon, and Rebecca Wolff

Teju Cole’s debut, Open City: A Novel, was published by Random House in 2011. Riverhead Books released Anna Solomon’s first novel, The Little Bride, in September. Fence editor Rebecca Wolff’s debut novel, The Beginners (Riverhead, 2011), follows three published poetry collections.

Happy Hour Poetry Reading: Cave Canem Fellows

Derrick Weston Brown, Aracelis Girmay, and Kevin Simmonds

Derrick Weston Brown is the inaugural Poet-In-Residence of Busboys and Poets and the author of Wisdom Teeth (Busboys & Poets/PM Press, 2011). Aracelis Girmay’s new book of poetry, Kingdom Animalia (Boa Editions, Ltd., 2011), was awarded the Isabella Gardner Poetry Award. Poet, composer, and performance artist Kevin Simmonds is the author of Mad for Meat (Salmon Poetry, 2011). The popular Friday Happy Hour series features readings and refreshments on select Fridays at 5 p.m.; this event is co-sponsored with Cave Canem Foundation.

Emerging Writers Reading Series: Mohammed Naseehu Ali, Special Guest

Mohammed Naseehu Ali’s debut collection of stories, The Prophet of Zongo Street, was published by Harper in 2006. The Emerging Writers Readings showcase the graduate students of the NYU Creative Writing Program and feature established writers as special guests.

Poetry Reading: Garrett Hongo

Garrett Hongo’s newest collection of poetry, Coral Road, was published in 2011. His other collections of poetry include The River of Heaven (1988), which was the Lamont Poetry Selection of the Academy of American Poets and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Yellow Light (1982). Hongo will be introduced by Pultizer Prize-winning poet and NYU faculty member Yusef Komunyakaa.

Readings by VIDA’s board members Erin Belieu, Barrie Jean Borich, Kekla Magoon, Cate Marvin, Danielle Pafunda, Susan Steinberg, Cheryl Strayed, and Ann Townsend. The popular Friday Happy Hour series features readings and refreshments on select Fridays at 5 p.m.; this event is co-sponsored with VIDA.
