Terminals, an exhibition of 24 black-and-white underwater photographs by Simon Pinter, the 2010 Constantiner Fellowship award winner in the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, will open December 2, 2011.  It will remain on view through January 14, 2012.

Established in 2005, the Leon and Michaela Constantiner fellowship enables one graduating senior from the Department of Photography & Imaging each year to pursue a New York based project.  The Constantiners are photography collectors interested in supporting promising young artists.

With the support of the grant, Pinter made images of the ocean floor surrounding New York Harbor and another major shipping terminal on the East Coast. Terminals describes both the origin and destination of great journeys; the point at which human objects come to rest at the bottom of the ocean and meet other life eager to appropriate them. This struggle between the natural and man-made is materialized in his immersive photographs and accompanying video installation.

The exhibition runs December 2, 2011 through January 14, 2012 in the Gulf &Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway.  Gallery hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free.  A photo ID is required when entering the building.  (Please note: The building will be closed from December 26, 2011– January 3, 2012.)

The Department of Photography & Imaging is an intensive four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives. The students work in virtually all modes of analog, digital, and multimedia photo-based image making, exploring photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression.  For further information, visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.
