If you need a reminder that spring is actually here despite the cold snap we're having, look no further than the Japanese Camellias just starting to flower on the north side of the entrance to Coles Sports Center. We typically think of Camellias as plants suited for warmer climates (The American Camellia Society is based in Georgia), but hybridizing has resulted in a great variety of hardier Camellias like this cultivar named 'April Remembered' planted at Coles in the spring of 2006. Their glossy, evergreen foliage and huge blooms make Camellias a standout in the garden, great for an informal hedge or even a focal point. Camellias prefer filtered sun, so they're a good choice for a spot under trees like the oaks at Coles. Their roots need to be kept on the cool side with plenty of mulch, and they like acidic soils. With a little care, Camellias offer some big rewards!
