New York University's Graduate Acting Program and the Little Victory Players present Dexter and Lewellyn, a new play by Jonathon Ward directed by Scott Illingworth and designed by Ernest Schenk. Performances will be Friday-Sunday, July 22-24 in the Capitol Theater, 170 Front Street, Hancock, New York. Suggested donation $5-$10 with reservations at 607-363-2819.
Dexter and Lewellyn is the story of Dexter, in a struggling Southern Tier town in upstate New York in the 1970s, who took a job at the local factory after high school. And Lewellyn who went away to college, but came back home to teach. And Maggie, Dexter’s interim girlfriend, who is still working at McDonald’s. And Skip who is still managing the factory, which may move to Mexico. And Christopher a guy from New York City, who is making a video to help save the factory from closing. The play is based on the lives of people living in the Southern Tier and Upstate New York where the playwright lived and worked for ten years and has family roots going back generations.
The presentation of the play is unique collaboration between the Little Victory Players and NYU Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program. Ernest Schenk, artistic director, of the Little Victory Players graduated from the program in 1970. The actors, Roberta Emerson, Bryce Gill, Timothy Sekk, Patrick Vaill and Laura June Weissinger are current students or recent alumni. Scott Illingworth, the director, is a faculty member.
The project is supported, in part, by the NYU Office Civic Engagement, which funds the development of curriculum that engages students in serving communities outside the University. The director and actors, who are from towns in different locales across America, visited Hancock to do research so that their performance is created from the fabric of Southern Tier reality.
