Dr. Robert Berne, NYU’s Executive Vice President for Health, and Dr. Charles Bertolami, the Herman Robert Fox Dean of NYU’s College of Dentistry, today announced the appointment of Dr. Judith Haber as Interim Dean of the College of Nursing.

Dr. Bertolami said, “We all know Judi as a genuinely exceptional administrator, educator, and scholar who is totally committed to the welfare of the College of Nursing.  There has been no stronger advocate of inter-professional education in the health sciences and the partnership with the College of Dentistry.  I can think of no individual more qualified to lead the College during this time of transition, and to continue the dedication to excellence embodied by former Dean Fulmer.  She has the respect of faculty, students, administration, and staff, and an outstanding reputation in both the nursing community and the University.  I want to congratulate her on this new role, and thank her for taking on this assignment during our search for a new dean for the College of Nursing.”

Prior to her appointment as Interim Dean, Dr. Haber was the Ursula Springer Leadership Professor in Nursing and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Nursing.  In that role, she was the academic leader for 15 Master’s programs and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program.  She was also the leader of two nurse practitioner-managed primary care practices: one located at the College of Dentistry to increase access to seamless oral and systemic primary care for underserved populations, and the other an urban school-based health initiative featuring a mobile health van that provides primary care services and health literacy programming to recent immigrant and underserved adolescents in Brooklyn.

Dr. Haber is the recipient of numerous awards including: the 1995 and 2005 Psychiatric Nurse of the Year Award from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the 1998 ANA Hildegarde Peplau Award, distinguished alumna awards from both Adelphi University and the NYU College of Nursing, a 2011 NYU Distinguished Teaching Award, and being named a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

She is an internationally renowned expert in evidence-based practice and is co-editor of the award winning text, Nursing Research: Methods and Critical Appraisal for Evidence-based Practice.  She is also esteemed as a clinician and educator in psychiatric-mental health nursing, as well as for her award-winning textbook Comprehensive Psychiatric Nursing.  Dr. Haber is the author of numerous articles on psychiatric nursing, advanced practice nursing, and evidence-based practice that appear in a variety of refereed journals, and she is a frequent presenter at professional conferences.

Dr. Haber earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing, cum laude, from Adelphi University; she earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from New York University.
