New York University College of Dentistry and the Manhattan Tobacco Cessation Program (MTCP) want you to support your Valentine this year by helping them quit smoking.

“There is no better way to show your love than by standing by their side as they kick the habit,” says   Diana Zraik, Program Coordinator of MTCP.  “Need advice on how to help? Here are 10 ways you can help your loved one quit smoking.”

10 Ways to Help Your Valentine Quit Smoking

1.      Applaud your partner’s quit attempt

2.      Listen to him or her: respect what they are saying and feeling

3.      Do your research and be a resource they can rely on

4.      Create a smoke-free environment by removing matches, lighters, and prohibiting smoking in any part of the house

5.      Help them stay busy with healthy activities like exercise or reading

6.      Be sympathetic to the physical and emotional symptoms of withdrawal

7.      Encourage them to talk about slips and relapses, and tell them that they haven’t failed, but are going through a normal part of quitting

8.      Remind them of the reasons that they want to quit

9.      Promote proper use of approved quit smoking medications like the nicotine patch or gum.

10.  Share the phone number for the New York State Smokers’ Quitline to provide professional advice and quit smoking tips (1-866- NY- QUITS)
