Silver School of Social Work Presents 'Menal Health Recovery - Practices, Services and Research' -- Oct. 28 & 28

            On October 27 and 28, 2010, the Silver School of Social Work at New York University will host a two-day conference that combines cutting edge approaches and new ways of thinking to advance the promise and possibilities of mental health recovery.

At this timely and important conference, consumers, practitioners, researchers and policymakers will come together to learn and share new ideas about infusing recovery into mental health services. Featured speakers include Commissioner Michael Hogan (New York State Office of Mental Health), Assistant Commissioner Trish Marsik (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene), Harvey Rosenthal (New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services) David Shern (Mental Health America), Courtenay Harding (Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies), and Peggy Swarbrick (Collaborative Support Programs).

       Entitled “Mental Health Recovery: Practice, Services and Research,” the event runs from 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m. each day, and will be held at the NYU Kimmel Center for University Life, 60 Washington Square South, Room 914, New York, N.Y.

      Day One  / Focus on Practice: Peggy Swarbrick speaks on “Wellness: A Model for Personal and Professional Transformation”; Mark Duffy addresses “A Social Worker’s Vision Creates a Viable Recovery & Wellness Service Model”; Peggy Swarbrick addresses “Achieving Wellness by Addressing Poverty and Self Sufficiency”; and Courtenay M. Harding will deliver a lunch-time plenary talk on “Turning the Recovery Model Downside Up and Outside In.”  Afternoon workshops on: employment, holistic approaches, organizational transformation, integration of culture and recovery and Wellness Recovery Action Plans.

     Day Two / Focus on Research: Morning keynote address by New York State Commissioner Hogan. Afternoon workshops: Benjamin Henwood, John Jost, Stacy Matuza and Ellen Healion speak on “Choice-Focused Services in Community Practice”; Mary Jane Alexander, Lenora Reid-Rose, Christina Pratt and Joshua Koerner address “Complex Recoveries - Identifying Issues and Solutions”; Deborah Padgett, Victoria Stanhope and Ana Stefancic speak on “Housing, Home & Community”; Kim Hopper, Nora Jacobson, Michael Rowe and Philip Yanos address “Redefining Outcomes to incorporate the value of Self-Determination”; and Lara Weinstein, Kristine Jones, Sophie Mitra, David Brown, Priscilla Ridgway & Eileen McGinn address “The Added Value of Community Participation in Research on Health & Well Being.Closing session summary: David Shern.
