The ancient Greek myth Jason and the Argonauts is brought to life as a comedic tale of heroism and adventure when Visible Fictions brings its theatrical production to New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on November 6 at 2:00 p.m. Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Visible Fictions is one of the U.K.’s leading theatre companies, presenting works to inspire and engage children and families everywhere. The presentation is part of NYU Skirball Center’s Big Red Chair Family series.
Jason and the Argonauts tells the story of a wronged prince, Jason, who was banished from his kingdom as an infant after his father, the king, was murdered by his uncle for the crown. When he comes of age, Jason returns to claim his rightful place on the throne. But before he can do this, however, the young prince must first set sail on the ship Argo with his band of men to find the Golden Fleece. During their perilous voyage Jason and his Argonauts face many difficulties along the way, including the odd monster, sleeping dragons, hungry harpies, and clashing rocks.
This inventive take on a classic tale has received international praise following two enormously successful U.S. tours which included runs at The New Victory Theatre on Broadway and The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Using two actors, a handful of action figures, and one incredible wooden cart, Visible Fictions has created an adventure story that will inspire the hero in us all.
The performance runs 65 minutes and is recommended for ages 8 and up.
