The Photographic Genome: Faces, Masks, Genes & Documents, an exhibition of 17 multi-media works by Sarah Getto, the 2010 Constantiner Fellowship award winner in the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, will be on view from December 2 through January 15, 2011.
Established in 2005, the Leon and Michaela Constantiner fellowship enables one graduating senior from the Department of Photography & Imaging each year to pursue a project in New York City. The Constantiners are photography collectors interested in supporting promising young artists.
With the support of the grant, Getto took photographs and collected documents issued by the State of New York representing imposed, inherited, and created identity. The artist, who is adopted, seeks to create a separate expression of hereditary identity. The exhibition comprises archival inkjet prints, drawings, Polaroid photographs, video, and legal documents.
The exhibition runs December 2 through January 15, 2011 in the Gulf &Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway. Gallery hours are: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free. A photo ID is required when entering the building. (Please note: The building will be closed from December 24, 2010– January 1, 2011).
The Department of Photography & Imaging is an intensive four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives. The students work in virtually all modes of analog, digital, and multimedia photo-based image making, exploring photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression.
