New York University’s Kimmel Center has on display an exhibition of 12 large-scale, color photographs depicting everyday life in Afghanistan by photographer Robert Nickelsberg.  The photographs, reproduced on self-adhesive vinyl, each measure 40 x 58 in. and have been mounted on the inside of each exterior window of the Kimmel Center Windows Gallery, located at LaGuardia Place and West 3rd Street.  Entitled The Great Game: Afghanistan Photo Exhibit, the display will remain on view through January 21, 2011.

Robert Nickelsberg has been a TIME Magazine contract photographer for 25 years and began documenting the war in Afghanistan in 1988. Based in New Delhi, India, he had first hand exposure to the early days of the rise of al Qaeda and Islamic fundamentalist groups nurtured in the Afghanistan-Pakistan tribal areas. He has been covering Afghanistan and South Asia for over twenty years.

Nickelsberg also provided extensive coverage of the 2003 Iraq invasion, the two decades of civil war, militancy and the devastating psychological effects of war in Kashmir. Nickelsberg is on the Advisory Board of the Kashmir Initiative at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University. In 2008, he was awarded a grant from the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma and the South Asia Journalists Association for the study of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Kashmir after 20 years of conflict.

The photography exhibition has been co-presented by NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, The Public Theater and The Play Company and organized in conjunction with the Tricycle Theatre Company’s three-part theatrical event The Great Game: Afghanistan, presented at the Skirball Center by The Public Theater, December 1-19, 2010.
