“On the Front Line of Change” Conference Will Focus on NICHE Hospital Innovations in the Care of Older Adult Patients

More than 400 nurses and healthcare professionals from over 100 hospitals will gather in Las Vegas, Nevada for the 14th annual NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) Conference, April 6-8, 2011 at Caesars Palace. The theme of this year's conference is “On the Front Line of Change!”

The annual NICHE Conferences are organized to give healthcare professionals the opportunity to share and learn evidence-based geriatric best practices to help meet the goal of excellence in nursing care for the hospitalized older adult.

“Continuing our focus on NICHE success stories, this year’s conference will highlight innovations devised by our hospitals to improve the quality of care for older adult hospital patients,” says Marie Boltz, Ph.D., RN, GNP-BC, associate director, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, Practice Initiatives. “Clinicians, administrators, and researchers will present evidence-based approaches to relationship-based care, medication management, transitional care and more.”

Keynote Speakers at this year’s conference are:

Lorraine C. Mion, Ph.D., RN, FAAN

Dr. Lorraine Mion is the Independence Foundation professor of nursing, School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University. Mion serves on the geriatric advisory board for the Society of Hospital Medicine and the NICHE Program through the John A. Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing. Dr. Mion’s conference presentation will be “On the Front Line of Change.”

Marie Manthey, MNA, FAAN, FRCN

Dr. Marie Manthey is president emeritus of Creative Health Care Management. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Her conference presentation will be “Relationship Based Care.”

Kellie Flood, MD

Dr. Kellie Flood is associate professor in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and is medical director for UAB Acute Care for Elders Unit. She also serves as co-director for UAB’s NICHE initiatives. Dr. Flood’s presentation will be “Improving Medication Safety in Hospitalized Older Adults.”

Tara Cortes, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN

Dr. Tara Cortes is the executive director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and holds the Mathy D. Mezey Chair as a professor in geriatric nursing at the New York University College of Nursing. Dr. Cortes’ conference presentation will be “Transitional Care.”
