Each year, NYU students receive some of the most distinguished scholarships and fellowships in the nation.

NYU Students Honored with Nation’s Top Scholarships and Fellowships

Each year, NYU students receive some of the most distinguished scholarships and fellowships in the nation. While many students are still waiting to hear from competitions such as the NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarship, Fulbright Grant, Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship, and the Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship, the following is a list of awards won so far this academic year.

Truman Scholarship

Stephanie Baker (Gallatin ’11) has been awarded a Truman Scholarship, which provides up to $30,000 for graduate study in public service fields. 

Beinecke Scholarship 

Amanda Rysling (CAS ‘11), a linguistics major, has been named a Beinecke Scholar.  This award, of which only 22 are given nationwide to college juniors each year, provides $34,000 for graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Rysling plans to pursue a Ph.D. in linguistics. 

Morris K. Udall Scholarship

Shane Crary-Ross (SSW ‘11) was named a Udall Scholar. The award provides up to $5,000 towards tuition and other college expenses for students who have demonstrated commitment to the environment and plan to pursue careers in that area. 

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship 

Chaney Lin (CAS ’11), a physics and mathematics double major, was named a Goldwater Scholar. This award provides up to $7,500 per remaining undergraduate year for students who plan research careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. 

Merage American Dream Fellowship 

Vivek Nemana (CAS ‘10), a double major in economics and journalism, has been named a Merage American Dream Fellow. This award provides $20,000 to help immigrant students pursue their American dream; only 12 graduating seniors receive this honor nationwide. 

Fulbright Grant

Funded by the U.S. Department of State, these grants provide full funding for an academic year abroad to students pursuing independent research or teaching English.  Wilfredo Matias (CAS ‘10) will conduct research in biology in the UK; Rachel Nusbaum (Gallatin ’09) will pursue an English Teaching Assistantship in the Czech Republic; Annie Waldman (Tisch '07) will pursue a documentary filmmaking project in Israel; Andrew Burgard (GSAS PhD) will go to the Czech Republic; Stephanie Dahle (CAS ’08) will study government policies on women’s education and healthcare in Oman; Jennifer Blaylock (Tisch MFA) will go to Ghana; Maggie Popkin (GSAS PhD) will study in Italy; David Rainbow (GSAS PhD) will go to Russia; Poulami Roychowdhury (GSAS PhD) will go to India; Rosemarie Trentinella (GSAS PhD) will go to Italy; Douglas Chiu (Wagner MPA) was named a Fulbright alternate to study in Taiwan; and Aurelia Shrenker (Gallatin ‘10) has been named an alternate to study traditional folk music in Georgia. 

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship 

Ten NYU seniors and alumni have won this award, which provides three years of graduate school funding.  The recipients are: Jesse Amato-Grill (CAS ’10), Timothy Berkelbach (CAS ’09), Kenneth Chiou (CAS ’10), Christine Constantinople (CAS ’08), James Cornwell (CAS ’07), Ryder Diaz (CAS ’04), Adriane Fresh (CAS ’07), Carl Nadler (Tisch ’07), Jalel Sager (Gallatin ’99), and Kyle Viterbo (CAS ’07). 

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Funded by the U.S. State Department, this award provides scholarships for undergraduate study abroad. NYU undergraduates have received 15 Gilman Scholarships so far for spring 2010. The recipients are Rida Aslam (CAS ’11), Crystal Bell (CAS ’11), Lisa Garcia (Gallatin ’12), Jessica Jimenez (CAS ’12), Kimberly Konopka (Steinhardt ’12, declined), Gracie Kowalczyk (SCPS ’11, declined), Joanna Macellaro (Steinhardt ’12), Carolina Mora (Nursing ’12), Mary Murphy (Tisch ’12), Philipp Nuzhdin (Stern ’12), Sharlene Piverger (Stern ’12), Jasmine Soltani (CAS ’11), Waleska Suero (CAS ’11), Amanda Walsh (Gallatin ’11), and Christine Yuen (Stern ’12). 

Critical Language Scholarship 

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, this award funds intensive summer institutes in critical languages. Melanie Ehrlich (Gallatin ’10) will study Korean, Rebecca Karasik (CAS ’10) will study Persian, Shira Rubin (CAS ’10) will study Arabic, Kaivan Sattar (CAS ’12) will study Urdu, Savannah Shipman (LSP ’13) will study Turkish, Sonia Gaind Krisnan will study Urdu, Halima Gellman will study Arabic, Rachel King will study Chinese, Irina Levin will study Turkish, Alexis Pang-Ben Bella will study Urdu, and Gobind Singh will study Punjabi. 

Humanity In Action Fellowship

Christine Johnson (CAS ’11) was awarded this fellowship, which provides support for five weeks of intensive summer study of contemporary minority and human rights issues in Europe.  She has declined the award.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

Camilo A. Romero (Law '12) was awarded this fellowship, which offers a maintenance grant of $25,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program attended by the Fellow.

Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship

Gregory Leslie (CAS '12) has received an Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship. The award provides two summer international affairs internships in Washington, D.C., and funds study abroad during junior year.
