Thais Francis, a sophomore at the Tisch School of the Arts, has been chosen to read her paper at the 2010 Undergraduate Ethics Symposium at DePauw University’s Prindle Institute, April 8-10.   Francis, a drama major from Trinidad and Tobago, was one of 27 students chosen from colleges and universities across the United States to take part.

“I decided to enter because of my dedication to the empowerment of countries in the Caribbean and Africa through the performing arts,” said Francis. The Institute at DePauw is a center for interdisciplinary reflection on ethical issues, and the symposium is an opportunity for Francis and her peers to engage in dialogue with leading scholars and artists about today’s ethical concerns.

In her paper, Francis personifies Africa as a young woman and deals with how we treat others, and how they may feel as a result of our treatment.  “It is important to think of how we treat others ethically, and consider the long term consequences of our actions,” she said.  She goes on to ask, “Is there an ‘Africa’ in our lives? Should we rethink the way we treat others in order to mend wounds, and prevent future hurt?”
