The Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour and VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, come to NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts with the touching new family musical Nobody’s Perfect on May 8 at 2:00 p.m. Based on the children’s book by Academy Award-winner Marlee Matlin (Best Actress, Children of a Lesser God) and Doug Cooney, this original production is a poignant reminder that despite first impressions, nobody’s perfect.

Nobody’s Perfect is simultaneously performed in spoken English and American Sign Language and is the first production ever to tour the U.S. with an open-caption system built into the set.  Adapted for the stage with script and lyrics by Doug Cooney, music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, and direction by Coy Middlebrook, the original cast recording of the family musical Nobody’s Perfect received a Parent’s Choice Award and a 2009 Best Products Media Award from iParenting.com.

Through song, speech, sign language, and captions the musical follows fourth-grader Megan who is busy planning her positively purple birthday party. When the seemingly perfect Alexis joins her class and does not want to come to Megan’s party, Megan wonders if Alexis is treating her differently because she is deaf. When the girls are forced to work together on a school science project, Megan learns Alexis has a secret.

The performance runs 60 minutes and is recommended for ages 8 and up. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online, by phone at 212.352.3101 (toll-free 866.811.4111), or in person at the Skirball Center Box Office. NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts is located at 566 LaGuardia Place (at Washington Square South). Click here for a complete calendar of events.
