For some time, adding a fourth tower to the landmarked site has been among the proposals in NYU 2031: NYU in NYC, the University’s strategic space planning framework.  The more detailed designs were prepared as part of an upcoming presentation to Community Board 2 and in preparation for NYU’s submission on the proposal to the Landmarks Preservation Commission this fall.

NYU Sr. Vice President Lynne Brown said, “Although this proposal requires us to seek more city approvals, we think it is the proper course.  The design accomplishes several things at once.  It respects the existing I.M. Pei design; it keeps development on NYU’s own footprint; it meets important needs for housing faculty and visitors to our campus; and it protects the views of existing residents and increases the amount of open space within the overall site.  The University’s planning calls for using the available square footage on this block; we believe that developing this proposal is far preferable to moving forward with a large building on the block’s supermarket site that would block views, leave less open space, and fit less well with the existing design.  We look forward to our dialogue with the community about the proposal.”
