The Islamic Center at New York University will host “Building Momentum in Mainstream Culture,” a two-day conference designed to engage American Muslims in conversations bridging Islam and mainstream American culture, on Friday, January 22 (6:30 p.m.-11 p.m.) and Saturday, January 23 (9 a.m.-10 p.m.) at NYU’s Kimmel Center for University Life (60 Washington Square South [at LaGuardia Place]).

During the conference, scholars, leaders, and artists will debate, discuss, and explore Islam’s embrace of the mainstream culture. Speakers include Islamic scholar Zaid Shakir, award-winning-journalist Shahed Amanullah, Ingrid Mattson, director of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations and first female president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), and comic book writer and essayist G. Willow Wilson. Sessions include: “Civil Liberties in Conflict,” “Community Development: Understanding the Other,” and “Telling the American Muslim Story: Creativity and Islam”.
