In this centennial year celebrating the achievements of Alwin Nikolais, Tisch dance will present his 1982 multi-media masterpiece Pond, staged by Alberto Del Saz, artistic director of the Nikolais Louis Foundation for Dance. Doug Varone’s Of the Earth Far Below—considered a searing depiction of human interaction with rumble-tumble physicality—will be performed by a male/female cast of eight. And reprising their world premieres from SADC’s December concert are: among the scapes and fields by alumnus Stacy Spence, a visually arresting human landscape for 19 women; and Brass by Diane Coburn Bruning, a stridently exciting contemporary pointe piece. Composer Andy Teirstein has created an original brass score for Bruning’s dance and it will be performed live by musicians from the NYU Steinhardt Music Department, Brass Studies Program.
The student choreographers are: Angela Curotto, Joshua Green, Julie McMillan, Kristin Schwab and Simone Sobers.
The six performance series opens Wednesday, March 31 and runs through Monday, April 5, 2010. Curtain is 8 p.m. Admission is $10; seniors $5 and students with ID, free. All proceeds benefit the Tisch Dance Scholarship Fund. Performances will take place in the Fifth Floor Theatre, 111 Second Avenue. For reservations and information, call 212.998.1982, Mon.-Fri., between 1 and 5 p.m.
