300 “clamshell” reusable containers to be given out during spring 2010 semester
New York University Dining Services, in effort to further reduce waste generated by NYU Dining facilities, has just launched a reusable Meals-2-Go container program to decrease the number of disposable containers used in campus dining facilities. The program is being piloted in Hayden Dining in the Spring 2010 semester. NYU Dining Services is giving out 300 reusable containers to students, faculty, or administrators willing to participate in the pilot.
“The goal of the pilot program is to test the logistics and gather feedback in order to finalize the program before it is rolled out to other dining halls,” said Carmen Mayes, Marketing Manager for ARAMARK at NYU. “The containers are made of polypropylene (recyclable #5 plastic), are BPA free, and microwave safe. You can place your meal in the refrigerator and reheat it in the microwave, just as you would with our paper Meals 2 Go container,” she said.
Participants in the Meals-2-Go container program pick-up a clean, sanitized container at the cashier station in Hayden, fill it with their meal, and go. Participants are asked to rinse the containers (they do not have to thoroughly wash them) before returning them to Hayden on their next visit. Participants then have the option of exchanging the rinsed container for a clean, sanitized one at the cashier station, and re-filling; or, if they do not need another container at that time, participants will be given a Pilot Program Membership Card that can be redeemed for a clean, sanitized reusable container when they are ready for their next Meal-2-Go.
