Mark Tygert, an assistant professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has won a fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to continue his research in applying computing methods to advance science and engineering.

“The Sloan Research Fellowships support the work of exceptional young researchers early in their academic careers, and often at pivotal stages in their work,” said Paul L. Joskow, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.  “I am proud of the Foundation’s rich history in providing the resources and flexibility necessary for young researchers to enhance their scholarship, and I look forward to the future achievements of the 2010 Sloan Research Fellows.”

Tygert’s work explores a range of computations, including randomized algorithms and statistics, in order to improve electrical engineering, data mining, machine learning, and weather prediction. Research in this field seeks to enhance the design of microchips, antennas, and stealth aircraft and also to boost the functionality of search engines.

Prior to joining NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in the fall of 2009, Tygert was a visiting assistant professor at UCLA (2008-09) and a postdoctoral associate at Yale University (2004-08), where he obtained his Ph.D. in applied mathematics (2004). Tygert has been a recipient of a Barry Goldwater Scholarship and a U.S. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. He received the 2010 Award for Initiatives in Research from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Sloan Foundation grants are for $50,000 over a two-year period. For a complete list of winners, visit their website.

Editor’s Note:

New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences is a leading center for research and education. Established under the leadership of Richard Courant in 1935, the Courant Institute has contributed to U.S. and international science and engineering by promoting an integrated view of mathematics and computer science. The Institute is engaged in broad research activities, applying these disciplines to problems in biology, chemistry, physics, economics, and atmosphere-ocean science. The Courant Institute has played a central role in the development of applied mathematics, analysis, and computer science, and is comprised of a faculty which has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of their extraordinary research accomplishments.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit grant-making institution that supports original research and broad-based education in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and economic performance.
