Cypriot President Christofias to Address NYU Conference, “Archaeologies of Yeronisos off Cyprus”
Demetris Christofias, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will address the opening of NYU’s Center for Ancient Studies conference, “Archaeologies of Yeronisos off Cyprus: The Island Beyond the Island,” on Friday, September 24. The conference, the annual Ranieri Colloquium on Ancient Studies, is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus and the 20th anniversary of the New York University Yeronisos Island Excavations.

Demetris Christofias, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will address the opening of New York University’s Center for Ancient Studies conference, “Archaeologies of Yeronisos off Cyprus: The Island Beyond the Island,” on Friday, September 24, 6:00 p.m., at NYU’s Silver Center (Hemmerdinger Hall), 100 Washington Square East (at Washington Place). The conference, the annual Ranieri Colloquium on Ancient Studies, is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus and the 20th anniversary of the New York University Yeronisos Island Excavations. Sessions will be held September 24 and 25 and take place in NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall.

The keynote address, the Charles and Ritchie Markoe Scribner Distinguished Lecture in the History of Art, will be delivered by Sophocles Hadjisavvas, former director of Cyprus’s Department of Antiquities, and Joan Breton Connelly, a professor in NYU’s Department of Classics and director of NYU Yeronisos Island Excavations. The address, “Saving and Exploring Yeronisos: A Cyprus-American Collaboration,” is scheduled for Friday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Other sessions include: “The Potential Role of Island Ecology in Island Archaeology”; “Yeronisos and the Early Byzantine Art and Architecture of Western Cyprus”; and “Late Hellenistic Ceramics in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

The event is co-sponsored by NYU’s Department of Classics and Department of Art History, the Cyprus Embassy Trade Center, New York, the Panpaphian Association of America, and the Friends of Yeronisos.
