Summer 2010 NYU-SCPS Course Bulletin Features Photographic Composition from William Wegman

Celebrated artist William Wegman has placed his iconic stamp on the cover of the Summer 2010 course bulletin from the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (www.scps.nyu.edu).  In Wegman’s new composition—his third for NYU-SCPS—Bobbin, one of Wegman’s famed Weimaraners, is imagined as an NYU-SCPS student examining his course options beneath New York City’s fabled Washington Square Arch.

Wegman is in the company of more than 40 noted artists who have designed the School’s bulletin cover over the years.  Since 1969, NYU-SCPS has featured cover art from graphic artists and designers such as Takashi Murakami, Peter Max, Al Hirschfeld and John Jinks, making the bulletin itself an iconic brand image for the School.

“We pride ourselves on creating memorable elements in our marketing efforts,” said Dorothy Durkin, NYU-SCPS associate dean for Strategic Development and Marketing.  “The NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies is a significant presence in a singularly vibrant city, and our unique and contemporary bulletin covers are representative of that.”

NYU-SCPS has showcased unique artistic creations on its course bulletin covers since 1969, starting with visual artist Otto Piene’s Light Sculpture. Over the years, a variety of media have been used, including some innovative three-dimensional pieces—Jonathan Milne’s paper sculpture of a red apple with the Washington Square Arch for its backdrop; Joel Nakamura’s painting on hand-tooled tin; Susan Leopold’s mixed media collage; and perhaps two of the most challenging, Steve Miotto’s mosaic, and Eric Harshbarger and Henry Lim’s Lego™ sculpture.

About William Wegman

William Wegman was born December 2, 1943 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He received a BFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1965 and an MFA from the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana in 1967.

Man Ray, known in the art world and beyond for his endearing deadpan presence, became a central figure in Wegman's photographs and videotapes.
