East New York Farms is an urban farm and community-based organization in a predominantly Caribbean neighborhood in East New York.  You’ll have a chance to get your hands dirty on the farm, check out their farmers’ market, and learn about their awesome community organizing and youth empowerment.  Sponsored by Sustainable Silver.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010- May 12, 2010  All-day  NYU Green Apple Move Out open in all residence halls.  Moving out this spring?  Go Green and Give!  The 3rd Annual NYU Green Apple Move Out begins its three-week collection drive to benefit Goodwill Industries of NYC and City Harvest.  Collection areas will contain designated bins for your gently-used books, clothing and shoes, food (unopened, please), linens, techno-scrap, bicycles, furniture and small appliances. ·         Walk for Water - Over the Brooklyn Bridge 9:30 am-12:00 pm, The Aveda Walk for Water is a 6 kilometer walk held in cities around the world to raise awareness and funding for clean water organizations.  Join NYC in walking 6 kilometers – the average distance women in developing nations have to walk every day for clean water. Walks Begins/Ends at 1 Centre St (4, 5, 6 Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Subway Station).  For more information please see www.aveda.com.

·         Earth Day Street Fair 10:00-2:00 pm  On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, come rock the block with us!  In true street fair/block party fashion, there will be local artists, musicians including Total Slacker, green organizations, interactive booths, and food.  Bring your whites for free tie dying, and grab some free dosas from the famous NY Dosas cart! (Washington Place between Greene and Washington Square East)

·         Earth Day Banquet 8:00-10:00 pm Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, 4th floor, E&L Auditorium.  The Earth Day Banquet combines a delicious vegan dinner with a panel presentation from keynote speaker Andrew Revkin of the New York Times blog, Dot Earth, and panel speakers Karen Washington of Just Food, and Amanda Park Taylor of The L Magazine.  In the spirit of sustainability, please bring your own reusable glass, plate, and utensils.

Friday, April 23, 2010 10:00 am-3:15 pm Field Trip to Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Meet at Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, 7th Floor; COST: $5.  Join students from NYU and PS 124 on a visit to Stone Barns Farm in Tarrytown, NY, an environmentally conscious farm in the Hudson River Valley.  Students from PS 124 will be paired with an NYU student to take a tour of the farm and learn about community-based food production of local produced organic and sustainable foods. Friday, April 23, 2010 6:00-8:00pm New York City Bicycling: Past Present and Future, Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, Room 802. Join the City Cycling club at NYU for a panel conversation with a range of urban cycling experts who will discuss their views on the development of cycling in New York City and its prospects for the future.  Speakers include representatives from city agencies, non-profit advocacy groups, local bike-shops, and fellow students.

Saturday, April 24, 2010 9:00 AM-3:30 PM Hands on New York Day, Meet at the Kimmel Center, 7th Floor.  New York Cares is looking for 5,000 volunteers to give our city's public spaces a good spring greening on the 16th Annual Hands On New York Day. Please join us as we clean and revitalize 100 parks, gardens, playgrounds, community centers, and schools citywide and plant 20,000 trees in partnership with MillionTreesNYC. Please bring a MetroCard and a sack lunch. Breakfast will be provided.

Saturday, April 24, 2010  3:30-8:00 pm Off the Grid 2010: A Sustainable Music Festival @ Solar One, 23rd Street and the East River, NYC.  Off the Grid 2010 is outdoor music festival run "off-the-grid" on a solar-powered, recycled stage on the East River.  Come join us for a day of fun and environmental education! Student clubs, nonprofit organizations, and partners will be on hand providing educational exhibitions and giveaways. Tuesday, April 27, 2010 5:00-7:30 pm Environmental Studies Capstone Presentations on "Sustainability in Higher Education and the Greening of NYU" Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East, Room 507. Student teams present senior Capstone research projects that address environmental challenges facing the university.  Project presentations focus on solutions to the most pressing issues affecting NYU's environmental performance, including recommendations to the NYU Sustainability Task Force and key decision-makers.  Presentation topics include: "Improving NYU's Climate Action Plan," "A Waste Reduction Strategy for NYU," "Strengthening Environmental Assessment," and "Effective Behavior Change and Engagement."

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 12:00-2:00 pm H2O4U Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, Room 406.  H2O4U is a qualitative research project designed to investigate how people understand water and why they drink the type of water(s) they drink, be it tap water, filtered water, or bottled water. For effective environmental activism, activists have to understand their audiences and the problems they are trying to solve. H204U begins to describe some of the depth and tensions within the culture of bottled water consumption at NYU and recommends ways to reduce and even ban bottled water on campus.
