Rawlings was twice the head of state of Ghana and was the first president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, ruling from 1979 to 2001. Rawlings introduced democracy to Ghana under the political party National Democratic Congress and is still active in politics in Ghana and internationally. In 1993, he was the joint recipient of the World Hunger Award.
