On Wednesday, October 21, Les Dames dEscoffier New York (LDNY) and New York Universitys Fales Library will hold a reception honoring Carol Brock, founder of Les Dames dEscoffier, and celebrating the Les Dames dEscoffier/Carol Brock New Acquisitions Program. The event begins at 6 p.m.
The time has come to honor the founder of the first organization to support professional women in the food, wine and hospitality industry, says Rozanne Gold, past president of LDNY, who spearheaded the program.
To this end, members of Les Dames dEscoffier have pledged $50,000 over five years to help the Fales Library acquire new material for its extensive collection in food studies. This collection, numbering some 20,000 volumes and 5,000 pamphlets, supports the research of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and researchers working within disciplines such as food studies, food management, nutrition, American studies, and history. The materials are also of use to professionals outside of New York University who work as writers, journalists, chefs or food professionals.
Carol Brock began her long and distinguished career in food journalism in 1944 at age 20, when she landed her first job as assistant food editor of Good Housekeeping. In her capacity as hostess editor, a position the publication created for her, her responsibilities included recipe development and food photography. She also served as personal chef to Hearst magazine executives and editors and worked as a contributing editor of three Good Housekeeping cookbooks. Beginning in 1971, Brock spent 15 years as food reporter for the New York Daily News and in 1986, she moved on to the Times/Ledger, Queens. Carol remains active as a teacher, events producer, mentor, and board member of numerous organizations.
Ms. Brock founded Les Dames dEscoffier in 1976. It is now the largest chapter of Les Dames dEscoffier International, which consists of 27 chapters and over 1300 members worldwide. The members are leaders in the food, fine beverage and hospitality industries. Its main mission is education, advocacy and philanthropy. LDNYs current president, Deborah Mintcheff, has expressed her appreciation to all members in their financial support for the Carol Brock Acquisitions Program. Les Dames dEscoffier will become an integral part of the quest for new acquisitions and the restoration and preservation of works in Fales Library, Ms. Mintcheff stated. It is our goal to help Fales become home to the most important cookbook collection in America, and we are delighted that our members can serve as ambassadors for the university in the procurement of books for the Fales collection.
