In the first part of a series of discussions entitled “Demystifying the US Healthcare Reform Debate,” NYU Wagner Professor John Billings will describe the underlying causes of the problems facing the American health care system on Wednesday, October 7. This evening conversation will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Wagner, located in The Puck Building, 295 Lafayette Street (@Houston), 2nd Floor, lower Manhattan. The event is free and open to the public. The NYU Wagner Health Policy and Management Program, the Wagner Health Network, and the Wagner Policy Alliance are hosting Professor Billings at a time when healthcare reform is at the top of the agenda for President Obama and Congress. The series, which will be followed Monday, October 26, by a panel discussion (Part II: “Health Care Reform: Solutions, Politics and Media”), will provide in-depth information on the important and complex issues involved in the current debate, engaging peers and experts.

Professor Billings teaches about health policy and public service at NYU Wagner, and is principal investigator on numerous projects to assess the performance of the safety net for vulnerable populations and to understand the nature and extent of barriers to optimal health for vulnerable populations. Much of his work has involved analysis of patterns of hospital admission and emergency room visits as a mechanism to evaluate access barriers to outpatient care and to assess the performance of the ambulatory care delivery system. Professor Billings received his J.D. from the University of California (Berkeley).
