Grammy Award nominated songwriter, record producer, and slide guitarist Derek Trucks and his band will take to the stage of the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University for one night on December 10, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. The group’s 2009 World Tour-featuring the release of Band’s latest album, Already Free-is winding down and has already taken them to more than a dozen countries on four continents.
In Already Free The Derek Trucks Band expands on its blues roots and Southern rock style to incorporate the larger sounds of rock, soul, jazz, Latin, and Indian music. Produced by Trucks himself, the album features both original songs and reinvigorated old ones, crossing musical boundaries and genres. Accompanying the bandleader are Todd Smallie (bass and vocals), Yonrico Scott (drums, percussion and vocals), Count M’Butu (percussion), Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, flute and vocals), and Mike Mattison (lead vocals).
A critically acclaimed slide guitarist, Trucks was raised in a home filled with music. The guitar prodigy picked up the instrument at age nine, and was jamming with his own group by age 11. When Trucks reached 15 he had formed the core of The Derek Trucks Band. He became a full time member of the Allman Brothers Band in 1999 (his uncle Butch Trucks is a founding member). Trucks has played with some of the greatest musicians of all time, including Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, and Buddy Guy, among others. Trucks, who is now 30, is the youngest musician to be included in Rolling Stone’s list of the Top Hundred Guitarists of All Time.
