The Department of Photography & Imaging in the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television at New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts will feature two exhibitions of works by the Daniel Rosenberg Fellowship winner Ashley Valmere Fischer and the Leon and Michaela Constantiner Fellowship winner Robert Sukrachand opening December 4. The End of the Valley, by Fischer, is an exhibition of 35 color photographs that explores life in the Oregon Applegate Valley. And 74th + Roosevelt, by Sukrachand, comprises 33 color photographs documenting a corner in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens, New York.
The Daniel Rosenberg Fellowship was created in 1989 by Irwin and Civia Rosenberg in memory of their son Dan, who completed his B.F.A. in the Department of Photography & Imaging in 1988. Each year since its inception, the Fellowship has enabled one graduating senior to pursue a project involving travel. This year is the 20th and final year of the Rosenberg Fellowship.
Established in 2005, the Leon and Michaela Constantiner Fellowship enables one graduating senior to pursue a project based in New York City. The Constantiners are photography collectors interested in supporting promising young artists.
The End of the Valley, by Fischer (08), resumes her documentation of the Applegate Valley of Oregon, photographing the remote and hidden places that are slowly disappearing. Since graduating from Tisch, she has exhibited work in New York City and at Nelson Macker Fine Art, Port Chester, NY.
74th + Roosevelt is a continuation of Sukrachands (08) senior thesis. His collaborative documentary chronicles a community of people whose lives are centered on one corner in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens. Using formal portraiture, reportage, hand-written text, and first-person stories, the exhibition records the close human bonds and eccentric personalities created by life on the streets. Robert Sukrachand is originally from Massachusetts and divides his time between New York City and various wanderings through Southeast Asia.
Both exhibitions will open December 4, 2009 and remain on view through January 9, 2010 in the Gulf & Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway. Gallery hours are: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibitions are open to the public and admission is free. A photo ID is required when entering the building. (Please note: The building will be closed from December 24, 2009 - January 4, 2010).
The Department of Photography & Imaging is an intensive four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives.
