New York Universitys Graduate Acting Program and the Department of Design for Stage and Film in the Tisch School of the Arts have announced the world premiere of the new play Rift, by Caridad Svich. The play, an original commission by the Graduate Acting Program and created through the Joint-Stock Method, will open December 2 and run through December 6, 2009.
Rift, directed by Seret Scott, is an epic story about lives torn by war and its aftermath, by abuse, damage, profit, trade, and the intimate search for beauty. This violent, dream-like erotic fable explores the fate of the human animal in a dislocated world where gender, borders and cultures are crossed, and asks the question: how can a body that is torn find a way to heal itself and transform, and thus resist the tyranny of power? An award-winning Latina playwright, Svichs works have been staged throughout the U.S. and abroad at venues as diverse as INTAR, The Womens Project, 7 Stages, Cleveland Public Theatre, Salvage Vanguard Theatre, Dads Garage, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Mark Wing-Davey, chair of the Graduate Acting Program, seeks to engage students in the process of creating theater through the Joint-Stock Method. The Joint-Stock Method is a distinctive style of working with writers, designers and directors using company research to inspire. In a two to four week workshop on a given subject, actors research and re-tell events in theatrical form as well as improvisations. This provides the playwright with an imaginative springboard for her or his own creative process.
Rift will be performed at the Shubert Theatre, located at 721 Broadway, 5th Floor, Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 2- 4, at 8pm, Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2pm and 8pm, and Sunday, Dec. 6 at 7pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.smarttix.com, or by calling (212) 868-4444.
